Jack Turner argues against the idea that the election of President Barack Obama as harbinger of our new, post-racial society in a book that suggests that the race continues to constrain opportunity in America. He also says that the ideas of American Individualism are a narrow understanding of true individualism, and offers interpretations of the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Frederick Douglas, and more as support.
Jack Turner is assistant professor of political science at the University of Washington and a member of the Washington Institute for the Study of Ethnicity, Race, and Sexuality. He is the editor of A Political Companion to Henry David Thoreau.
