Silver on the Road by Laura Anne Gilman

Tuesday • February 7 • 6:30pm

Mill Creek store

Local author Laura Anne Gilman takes readers on a scenic tour of an outlandish Wild West in this delightful start to the Devils West series. Sixteen-year-old Isobel has grown up in the Territory—the vast region west of the Mississippi—folding laundry and serving drinks in a saloon owned by a powerful man called "the Devil." But when she's offered the job of the boss's "Left Hand," she begins a dangerous new life. Under the guidance of her new mentor, Gabriel, Isobel sets out to learn the ways of the road and the ropes of her new role. Gilman skillfully plays with Western folklore and history, infusing them with ambiguity and subtle strangeness to deliver a memorable adventure out on the untamed frontier.

The next book in the series, The Cold Eye, was just published on January 10, 2017.

Preparing the Ghost by Matthew Gavin Frank

Wednesday • February 8 • 6pm

U District store

Moses Harvey was the eccentric Newfoundland reverend and amateur naturalist who first photographed the near-mythic giant squid in 1874. In Preparing the Ghost, what begins as Moses's story becomes much more, as fellow squid-enthusiast Matthew Gavin Frank boldly winds his narrative tentacles around history, creative nonfiction, science, and memoir. In a full-hearted, lyrical style reminiscent of Geoff Dyer, Frank playfully ties in personal anecdotes and a catalog of bizarre facts and lists. Though Frank is armed with impressive research, what he can't know about Harvey he fictionalizes, quite explicitly, as a way of both illuminating the scene and exploring his central theme: the big, beautiful human impulse to obsess.
