Though she had always loved Victorian history and culture, Sarah Chrisman had always been skeptical of the corset because of what she'd heard about how it affected the female body. So when she received one as a gift from her husband, she was suspicious. Victorian Secrets is a book about how Chrisman discovered in the corset not a garment of oppression, but instead one that made her feel empowered.
Sarah A. Chrisman was born in a suburb of Seattle and graduated from the University of Washington in 2002. Alongside her husband, Gabriel, she gives presentations on nineteenth-century clothing, dress, and culture. The couple lives in Port Townsend, Washington, in one of the beautiful nineteenth-century homes they once coveted on visits to Washingtons Victorian seaport.
