Discussion & Book Signing
As New York City's transportation commissioner from 2007 to 2013, Janette Sadik-Khan transformed the streets of one of the busiest, most congested cities into safer, more dynamic spaces for vehicles, bikers, and pedestrians. Her urban re-imagination featuring the use of simple visual cues to denote protected spaces, innovative traffic calming and bike lane designs, and the installation of hundreds of pocket parks and plazas has influenced the redesign of countless cities around the world since. Streetfight: Handbook for an Urban Revolution chronicles her deconstruction and reinvention of the street in New York City and beyond. Joining us in Seattle, she will discuss the powerful new book and the many innovative ideas in it already changing cities around the world in conversation with Seattle Mayor Ed Murray.
Tickets are $32. Each ticket admits up to two people and includes a copy of Streetfight: Handbook for an Urban Revolution.

Internationally recognized for her expertise in transportation issues, public policy development, and innovative finance, Janette Sadik-Khan implemented an ambitious program to improve safety, mobility, and sustainability throughout New York City, and ensured a state of good repair on the city's roads, sidewalks, and bridges. Sadik-Khan oversaw a series of innovative projects, including creating more pedestrian space in Times Square and along Broadway from Columbus Circle to Union Square; the planning and launch of seven Select Bus Service routes and the nation's largest bike-share program, the addition of nearly four hundred miles of bicycle lanes; the design and installation of more than sixty plazas citywide; and the publication of a street design manual and street works manual, which defined new standards for creating more durable and attractive streets.
