Boneshaker by Cherie Priest

Thursday • April 24 • 5:30pm

Bellevue Store

In the early days of the Civil War, rumors of gold in the frozen Klondike brought hordes of newcomers to the Pacific Northwest. Anxious to compete, Russian prospectors commissioned inventor Leviticus Blue to create a great machine that could mine through Alaskas ice. Thus was Dr. Blues Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine born.

But on its first test run the Boneshaker went terribly awry, destroying several blocks of downtown Seattle and unearthing a subterranean vein of blight gas that turned anyone who breathed it into the living dead.

The Hunting Season by Andrea Camilleri

A SICILIAN BLACK COMEDY MASTERPIECE

On New Years Day, 1880, a stranger arrives in the little village of Vigata, where everyone knows each others secrets. His arrival greatly upsets some people, who begin mysteriously dying, one by one.

Figuring out who the central characters are is half the fun, and author Camilleri gleefully fools you. Characters you marginalize surprise you. Comments you originally thought funny turn out to be true. Far-fetched curses are fulfilled. Treachery, greed, and true friendship are just a scratch beneath the surface. Characters who were offensive become endearing.

This divinely goofy Italian revenge noir has a fiendishly clever plot teeming with dozens of earthy rural-types and crackling with hotheaded Italian insults. Every combustible scene is bubbling with emotion of every variety, as the town folk of Vigata go viciously hunting for happiness.
