Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist Adam Haslett offers a ferociously intimate story of familial devotion and the effects of a father's legacy of mental illness. When Margaret's fiancé, John, is hospitalized for depression in 1960s London, she faces a choice: carry on with their plans despite what she now knows or back away from the suffering it may bring her. She decides to marry him.

The consequences of this choice echo in the next generation when their brilliant, music-obsessed eldest son is found to have inherited his father's precarious condition. Told in alternating points of view by all five members of their family—parents Margaret and John and children Michael, Celia, Alec—this gut-wrenching, and yet frequently hilarious novel illuminates their struggles with such depth, tenderness, and vivid detail that readers feel they've not just read about them, but lived among them.
