Cora's mother abandoned her at the age of ten and fled to the freedom of the North. Cora is now a young woman and says shes not running away, but Caesar talks her into it. They plan on escaping togetheruntil Lovey surprises them by showing up and insisting on going with them.
Ridgeway, the most successful slave catcher in America is on their trail. Cora's mother got away from him. He's not going to let Cora do the same thing.
Colson Whitehead gives us Cora's escape attempt in thrilling chunks of story, interrupted by meditations by some of the characters and realistic period advertisements for runaway slaves. Whitehead can tackle just about any topic with realism and panache and this Pulitzer Prize-winning tale is no exception.
