"The Bear" from Go Down, Moses by William Faulkner

Tuesday • June 9 • 5:30pm

Bellevue Store

Join us on the second Tuesday of the month at 5:30pm to discuss fiction and non-fiction, classics and modern literature, history and contemporary culture, philosophy, biography, and just about everything in between.

Composed of seven interrelated stories, all of them set in Faulkner's mythic Yoknapatawpha County, William Faulkner's Go Down, Moses examines the complex, changing relationships between blacks and whites and man and nature, weaving together to create a cohesive novel rich in implication and insight. One of Faulkner's most impressive stories, "The Bear" recounts an annual hunting trip and the development of a young man against the background of vanishing wilderness. Through the hunt, the boy learns about his family's past, the destructive nature of greed, and the real meaning of pride, humility, and courage.

On a fateful summer morning in 1986, eleven-year-old Kirsty and Amber meet for the first time. By the end of the day, they will both be charged with murder. But when they meet up again 25 years later—in the midst of an investigation into sickening attacks on female tourists and with vastly different lives and unknowing families to protect—will they really be able to keep their wicked secret hidden?

Thursday • June 11 • 6:30pm

Mill Creek store

From history to memoir to cultural criticism—The Odd Shelf Book Club meets the second Thursday of each month at 6:30pm to discuss the best in new and classic non-fiction.

An essential Cold War history read, Ben Macintyre's A Spy Among Friends brings to life the story of the twentieth century's greatest spy. Brilliant and charming, Kim Philby rose to the head of Britain's counterintelligence against the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War—all while secretly working for the enemy. And when his betrayal was revealed, no one was more surprised than Nicholas Elliott, his longtime friend and fellow MI6 officer, and James Jesus Angleton, the crafty, paranoid head of CIA counterintelligence. Based on never-before-seen intelligence and told with heart-pounding suspense and keen psychological insight, this is Macintyre's best book yet.
