In 2003, British biologist and conservationist Dave Goulson purchased a derelict farmhouse and 33-acre meadow in the French countryside with aim of transforming it into a wildlife sanctuary. Over the course of a decade, he created a place for his beloved bumblebees (bees have been his professional area of study) and other small everyday creatures to thrive. But this book is not just a memoir about building a protected habitat in rural France; it is also wake-up call. It urges us to cherish and protect life in all its forms. Readers learn how a deathwatch beetle finds its mate, why butterflies have spots on their wings, and how a real scientist actually conducts his experiments while being inspired to look, listen, and go outside.
