Snakes, Sunrises, and Shakespeare: How Evolution Shapes Our Loves and Fears

Why are women better than men at remembering where things are in the grocery store? Why are the paintings in doctors' and dentists' offices often so similar? In his new book, Gordon H. Orians, UW professor emeritus, introduces the theory of evolutionary psychology as the answer, offering the survival-based behaviors of our ancient ancestors as the fascinating reasons behind many emotional responses and ingrained behaviors we rarely ever think about twice. Curious how other preferences, propensities, aspirations and aversions link back to the lives of those who came long before us? Join us for a reading and signing with Orians to find out.

Gordon H. OriansGordon H. Orians lives in Seattle, where he is professor emeritus of biology at the University of Washington. He is the author or editor of several books, including, most recently, Red-Winged Blackbirds: Decision-making and Reproductive Success and Life:  The Science of Biology.
