Nick's Book Club

The Drone Eats With Me by Atef Abu Saif (CARCANET)

The book store cafe fireside

Atef Abu Saif is raising his family in the largest refugee camp in Palestine. He risks his life every day walking to the Internet café to write the pages you will read in this book.

Experience this level-headed, understated account of 51 hellish days of 21st century warfare in Gaza, in which 1,900 civilians were killed. Its a world of bulldozed homes and orchards, homeless animals, constant electricity outs, uncharged phones, and waiting lines at every bathroom.

You, too, will ask, like his eleven-year-old son whos been lucky enough to survive three wars, "Daddy, when will the next war be?"

Join our own resident writer, Nick DiMartino, for a lively discussion of this month's selection. Book club members save 20% when you purchase this title at our University District Store.

Mill Creek store

Join us for discussions of the best in contemporary titles on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm.

Plum Kettle does her best not to be noticed, biding her time answering fan mail for a popular teen girls' magazine until she can get weight-loss surgery. But soon after Plum notices that she's being followed by a mysterious woman, she falls down a rabbit hole into a world of women who live life on their own terms. Part coming-of-age story, part revenge fantasy, Dietland is a bold, original, and funny debut novel that takes on the beauty industry, gender inequality, and our weight loss obsession—from the inside out, and with fists flying.

Garden Reads Book Club

The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan (RANDOM HOUSE)

Molbak's Garden + Home, 13625 NE 175th St, Woodinville

Gardeners and book lovers, join us the last Sunday of every month to discuss fiction and non-fiction books about gardening at Molbak's Garden + Home in Woodinville.

Every child learns about the mutually beneficial dance of honeybees and flowers: The bee collects nectar and pollen to make honey and, in the process, spreads the flowers' genes. In The Botany of Desire, food expert Michael Pollan ingeniously demonstrates how people and domesticated plants have formed a similarly reciprocal relationship. Through the stories of four familiar species—the apple, the tulip, marijuana, and the potato—Pollan illustrates how each plant has evolved to satisfy humankind's most basic yearnings—sweetness, beauty, intoxication, and control—and in doing so, made themselves indispensable.
