In 2009, Nisi Shawl decided to take on the steampunk genre by bringing to it that which she found missing—diversity. This fall, her highly-anticipated novel reimagines the genre and the colonization of the Belgian Congo—if the natives had learned about steam technology earlier. In her alternate world, a plot of land purchased from King Leopold II becomes a safe haven for native populations, escaped slaves, and mistreated Africans. And through their stories, Shawl gives voice to those who were silenced long ago, turning one of the worst human rights disasters into a captivating exploration of complex relationships and possibility. Join us the day the book comes out for this special reading, signing, and discussion of Everfair with Shawl.
