Gardeners and book lovers, join us the last Sunday of every month to discuss fiction and non-fiction books about nature.

Things aren't looking good for 14-year-old Mehrigul. She yearns to be in school, but she's needed on the family farm. The longer she's out of school, the more likely it is that she'll be sent off to a Chinese factory—perhaps never to return. Her only hope is an American woman who buys one of her decorative vine baskets for a staggering sum and says she will return in three weeks for more. Mehrigul must brave terrible storms, torn-up hands from working the fields, and her father's scorn to get the baskets done. The stakes are high, and time is passing.

Modern science has made startling discoveries about the relationship between human beings and other animals.

Far ahead of the curve was Rembrandt Bugatti, brother of the famous maker of automobiles, contemporary of Rodin. The essence of his life as a sculptor is captured in this subtle, lean, brilliant little novel. Bugatti once borrowed two antelopes to live with him in his apartment. He went to the zoo every day. His sculptures of baboons, giraffes, and panthers are unsurpassed. He committed suicide at age 31.

His obsession with animals is the heart of this unforgettable little novel. It's not a happy story, as German bombers in World War I close in on his city, but the love at the book's center is transformative and profound.

In the small, affluent town of Fairview, Connecticut, everything seems picture perfect—until the night 15-year-old Jenny Kramer is brutally attacked. A controversial drug medically erases her memory of the trauma, but though her physical wounds begin to heal, the emotional pain of things she has forgotten remains. Her parents, Tom and Charlotte, deal with it in opposing ways. Tom becomes obsessed with vengeance, while Charlotte tries to keep the horrific events from affecting their carefully constructed world. All the while, the question of who could've done such a thing hangs over the close-knit community.
