Join The Odd Shelf book club for a lively discussion of this month's book!

A true story about the interwoven history of coffee and civil war in Yemen, and the courageous journey of a young man–a Muslim and U.S. citizen–following his American dream.

Mokhtar Alkhanshali grew up in a tiny apartment in San Francisco with his seven siblings and Yemeni immigrant parents. 24 years old and unable to pay for college, he worked as a doorman until a chance encounter sparked his interest in coffee, and the drink's rich history in Yemen. Driven by a new purpose, he sets out to learn everything about coffee–cultivation, roasting, importing, including travelling to Yemen to visit farms and collect samples to help restore Yemeni coffee's former glory. On the brink of success in 2015, civil war envelops Yemen. As the U.S. embassy closes and Saudi bombs fall, Mokhtar is trapped in Yemen.
