Swallowing Mercury by Wioletta Greg

Join Nick's Picks book club for a lively discussion of this month's book!

Little Wiola grows up in a small, closely-knit village in 1980's Poland, living with her parents and grandparents in a harsh world of poverty until her father returns from prison.

Besides her colorful parents and grandparents, her world is populated by a notorious dressmaker, a creepy physician, and a spider-killing biology teacher. Greg experiences all the misunderstandings of childhood, the perils of collecting matchbook covers, the suspense of waiting for the Pope to pass through the village, and the terror of trying to win a deathly serious school contest for collecting scrap metal.

The novel is a loving, unsentimental tribute to Wiola's gentle father, unfolding in the little fictional Polish village of Hektary in the 80s.
