The Last House Guest

The Los Angeles Review of Books has written that Megan Miranda "reclaims the right of female characters to be more than victim or femme fatale, and thereby disrupts not only the plot, but also the genre itself." The Last House Guest gives readers a dynamite thriller with the deliciously sinister female relationships that continue to redraw the lines of genre fiction and the ways women see themselves in the world.

Littleport, Maine is an enclave for the wealthy whose summer homes dot the coastline and a simple harbor community for the year-round residents whose lives depend on service to the visitors. Sadie Loman, a moneyed vacationer whose family owns much of Littleports real estate, and Avery Greer, a townie getting into trouble after the tragic loss of her parents, developed an unusually fierce friendship in their teens. Each summer for almost a decade the girls were inseparable, until Sadie is found dead on the night of the towns annual, off-the-books end of summer party.

Her death is ruled a suicide, but a year later Avery is still convinced theres more to the story. And given her profound connection to Sadies family, Avery cant help but feel there are people in the community—a local detective and Sadies brother among them—who blame her, and shes intent on clearing her name before the facts get twisted against her. As Avery sets out to reconcile what she knows about her friend with the events of that fateful night, she discovers secrets about them both, and about this complicated town, that change everything.

Megan Miranda will be in conversation with Ann Eklund, Fiction Buyer at University Book Store.
